PE 185 Capoeria
Strongly influenced by various African elements, capoeira developed in the slave communities of colonial Brazil as a means of self-defense. The art also served as a conduit for group and self expressions under the oppressive conditions of slavery. Today it retains its martial elements and can be trained as a self-defense. Its most striking element, however, is found in the game of capoeira called a roda. This is where all the various elements come together- a fight without blows, a dance of intrigue and deception, individual self-expression with group support And a musical discourse.
Players combine the ginga with cartwheels, kicks, and sinuous body movements to create an unspoken dialogue. Music is integral to the game. It provides energy as well as a link with the past through lyrics that speak of history, culture, place, and time.
